DESCRIPTION:The Neogene plate-tectonic evolution of the Carpathian-Pannonia
n region led tolarge-scale volcanism that is unparalleled in Europe. In re
 cent years\, detailedvolcanological\, K-Ar and Ar-Ar geochronological\, an
d juvenile glass geochemicalstudies have significantly refined our knowled
ge regarding specific eruptions. Scenarios forcolossal (VEI 7) Middle- and
Late-Miocene eruptions were identified in the northern part of the Pannon
ian Basin\; these events had profound impacts on the environment\, which w
as characterized by a transition zone between land and sea (Central Parate
thys). While these eruptions\, occurring between 20 and 10 Ma\, were drive
n by crustal extension and mantle differentiation\, volcanism resulting fr
 om inward-directed subduction&mdash\;primarily along the Carpathian Arc&md
ash\;was also present from ca. 16 Ma onwards\, from Miocene to Quaternary
times. The youngest phase of the subduction-related volcanism took place a
t the Ciomadul (Csom&aacute\;d) volcano in Romania\; its eruptions (explos
ive activity\, lahars\, etc.) occurred within the last 30\,000 years and i
nfluenced the everyday life of early humansalready present in the area.
