DESCRIPTION:Saltmarshes are among the most productive ecosystems on earth.
These \nwetlands are vital components of coastal marine ecosystems\, beca
use the \nprovide important nursery grounds for fish and they limit \nnutr
ient-exchange at the land-sea boundary. My research group focuses \non qu
antifying the structure and function of microbial communities \ncatalyzing
key C and N cycling reactions across geochemical gradients. \nWe also rel
ate the ecosystem-level ecology of macrobenthos to the \nrates/ pathways o
 f C and N transformations mediated by microorganisms. \nOur results have d
emonstrated the importance of microbial iron \nrespiration to organic matt
er decomposition in saltmarsh sediments\, and \nGeographical Information S
ystems (GIS) were utilized to expand \nestimates of nutrient flow to entir
e saltmarsh basins over the \nkilometer scale. We provide the first deta
iled enumeration and \nidentification of iron-reducing bacteria in marine
sediments using a \ncombination of culture-based and molecular techniques.
We observed \nthat a rapid iron cycle\, facilitated by microbial iron re
duction and \nbioturbation\, prevents the poisoning of microbially-mediate
 d nitrogen \ntransformations (nitrification\, denitrification) by dissolve
d sulfide. \nThis new linkage between the nitrogen and iron cycles has be
en explored \nin the field and in laboratory incubations. My seminar will
present a \nsynopsis of the above recent discoveries at the interface of
 biology \nand geochemistry.
