Unravelling forest disturbance dynamics in Europe using Earth observation
Europe’s forests have been facing increasing forest disturbances with large-scale outbreaks of bark beetle and widespread wildfires observed after 2018. This recent wave of natural disturbances is often considered “unprecedented” or “unexpected”, despite reliable data on European forest disturbances being scarce. Based on large-scale Earth observation analysis, I will show that the wave of forest disturbances observed since 2018 was neither expected nor unpredictable. I will further highlight that the observed increase in forest disturbances across Europe will challenging the EU climate targets.More information:
The BayCEER Colloquium serves as an interdisciplinary platform for students, academics and interested citizens: during the lecture period, guests and members of BayCEER give insights into their research, which can then be discussed in plenary and in a relaxed atmosphere during the post-colloquium.
