The function and evolution of seminal fluid proteins in reproductive ecology

Seminal fluid proteins (SFPs) are major components of reproduction that play diverse roles beyond facilitating sperm function. These proteins influence female reproductive physiology, mediate sperm competition and shape post-mating sexual selection dynamics. In this talk, by examining the dynamics between environmental factors, genetic variation, and evolutionary pressures, I aim to highlight how SFPs contribute to reproductive success in ecological contexts. Through case studies spanning various taxa from insects to humans, I will discuss how these proteins drive evolutionary dynamics and adaptations as key mediators of reproductive strategies in nature.

The BayCEER Colloquium serves as an interdisciplinary platform for students, academics and interested citizens: during the lecture period, guests and members of BayCEER give insights into their research, which can then be discussed in plenary and in a relaxed atmosphere during the post-colloquium.
