DESCRIPTION:Questions related to the distribution and dynamics of terrestri
 al carbon (C)\nsinks are at the core of current scientific and policy deba
 tes on national\nand international levels. The current un-explained enhanc
 ement of C storage\nin the mid-latitudes\, and explicit inclusion in the K
 yoto protocol of the\nproviso that countries can reduce emissions either b
 y reducing consumption\nof fossil fuels or by increasing net C sequestrati
 on in terrestrial pools\nhas profound implications both for policy develop
 ment and for the study of C\ncycling in temperate forests.\nA number of ca
 uses have been proposed to explain current enhancement of C\nstorage in te
 mperate forests. The project I will describe seeks to quantify\nthe role i
 ncreased nitrogen (N) deposition is playing in enhanced C\nsequestration i
 n temperate mid-latitude forests using detailed measurements\nfrom an Amer
 iFlux tower in southern Indiana (MMSF). I will discuss the\nissues in maki
 ng accurate estimates of atmosphere-canopy exchange of N\,\nsome recent de
 velopments in instrumentation to provide more accurate N\nfluxes\,\npresen
 t a summary of the data we have collected so far and provide a first\nesti
 mate of the level of potential perturbation of C sequestration at this\nsi
 te due to the increased atmospheric N flux.
