The turnover of organic N-compounds (DON) in a deciduous forest ecosystem

BITÖK-A11

From 01/1998 to 12/2000

Fluxes and concentrations of DOC and DON in a deciduous forest ecosystem were measured for two years in order to identify sinks and sources and to determine their quantity and dynamics. Sources occur in the canopy and most pronounced in the forest floor, while mineral soil acts as a sink for those compounds. In the dynamics of their production and turnover no clear seasonal tendencies could be observed. The DOC/DON ratio increases from bulk precipitation to forest floor leachate, indicating a preferential mobilization of N-poor dissolved organic matter in the forest floor compared to throughfall. The controls and mechanisms of DON mobilization as well as microbial participation in immobilization of these substances are still to be identified. Laboratoy incubations of throughfall and forest floor leachate gave no indication for microbial consumption of DON or DOC throughout three weeks. Neither could DON production be correlated to temperature, solution pH or electrical conductivity alone in any compartment. The portion of amino-N and aminosugar-N in DON amounts 40-80% but gives no further evidence for the microbial participation in DON mobilization.
