Vertical fluxes over forests: Field experiments for the parameterization and validation of models

BEWA 2000

From 03/2001 to 10/2002

Principal Investigator: Otto Klemm
Staff: Jörg Gerchau, Andreas Held, Cornelia Gerwig (Klör)
Grant: AFO 2000 Atmosphärenforschung 2000

This project sets the basis for extensive field experiments to study the surface exchange of biogenic volatile organic compounds over a forest ecosystem (BEWA2000). The research complex BEWA 2000 involves over 16 institutions. BEWA2000 is coordinated by the Fraunhofer Institute for Atmospheric Environmental Research (IFU) in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany The research site Waldstein of BITÖK is made available for two major field experiments in the summers of 2001 and 2002. Intensive ecosystem research within the past 8 years, including plant ecological, meteorological and air chemistry analyses, as well as a good research infrastructure, set a basis for effective and focussed intensive research program within AFO2000 / BEWA2000.

One part of the project is therefore be the production of complete, quality controlled data sets from routine meteorological and air chemistry measurement at the research station "Waldstein" in the Fichtelgebirge mountains, NE Bavaria. Various data are used for the parameterization and/or the evaluation of a forest stand meteorological, biological and air chemistry modeling, predicting the emissions of BVOC from the forests.

In addition, measurement of vertical fluxes of O3, energy, H2O, and CO2 during intensive field campaigns at the Waldstein site are provided. Such measurements have been performed earlier so that they are not of experimental nature. Data assimilation for this project and interpretation of the micrometeorological and plant physiological conditions are however an important prerequisite for further interpretations of air chemistry and flux data from participating groups, and for the meaningful application models.

In addition, vertical fluxes of aerosol particles are measured. At the first place, "number fluxes" with a micrometeorological technique will be quantified. These measurements are of experimental nature, and the respective technical conditions must be made available. Interpretation of time series of aerosol size distributions will help to interpret the number fluxes with respect to the biosphere/atmosphere exchange of particles, in particular together with the respective fluxes of BVOC and their atmospheric reaction products.
