Revision of the stratigraphy of the Subotica artesian well borehole

Subotica is located in the north of Bačka region of Vojvodina (Serbia). The artesian wells were drilled in the last decades of the 19th century (in case of Subotica between 1882 and 1886) for the quality water supply of the towns of the Great Hungarian Plain.

The analyzed artesian well was drilled in the area of the railway station of Subotica. The stratigraphy based on lithological and malacological data of the 600 m deep borehole material were worked out of Halaváts, behalf of the Geological Institute in Budapest and the results were published in 1895.

The taxonomic revision were done by Krolopp in 1977 after the campaign of the Great Hungarian Plain (of Hungary) drilling project. Krolopp's revision based on Quaternary malacological data more than hundred analyzed boreholes and exposures in the Carpathian Basin. The revision of the data the interval from 99 to 275 m depth identified Halaváts identifed as Viviparus boeckhi Horizon of “Levantine stage”.  The results of Krolopp's revision the Viviparus boeckhi Horizon (of Lower Pleistocene and older parts of the Middle Pleistocene age) fluvial fauna identified at 99 and 124 m depth interval. The Paludina beds did found in the borehole material of Subotica. At the interval of 528-572 depth after the record of Limnocardium and Prosodacna vuskitsi Brusina fragments suggested the Ponitan beds, unfortunately it cannot be confirmed because the material has been lost.

After the results from explanatory drillings in the Sava riparian in the vicinity of Belgrade the stratigraphical information about polycycle fluvial sediments suggests some stratigraphical changes. The newly established Pleistocene Corbicula biozone should be the biozone (of Lower and Middle Pleistocene warm stages) which were younger than the Paludina beds. The oldermost subzone of the Pleistocene Corbicula biozone should be the Viviparus boeckhi Horizon.
