Coastal aquifers of Java, Indonesia, analyzed regarding their potential for submarine groundwater discharge

After several local studies have highlighted the importance of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) for marine ecosystems, the topic increasingly enters the focus of a broader scientific community. However, a region with very high potential SGD impacts, the tropics, is only weakly represented in the existing literature (Moosdorf et al., 2015). Java, Indonesia, is a hot spot for land ocean nutrient fluxes through rivers (e.g. Seitzinger et al., 2005), which suggests also a high potential for elevated nutrient fluxes through SGD. Nevertheless, only few studies have analyzed SGD from Java at local scale (examples in: Lubis et al., 2011).

Here we present a characterization of aquifers at the coast of Java in order to estimate the amount of groundwater and associated nutrients flowing through them directly into the surrounding sea at a regional scale. Based on the limited data and the concept of coastal catchments, i.e. the stretches of coast between river outlets which drain directly into the sea, we characterize and categorize the aquifers around Java. Their attribution leads to first order estimates about SGD which we show here.

Our analyses will help to test the hypothesis that SGD from Java is relevant for coastal ecosystems around the island and can also help evaluating the global relevance of SGD related matter flux from tropical regions.
