DESCRIPTION:The presentation will start with an overview of Coburgs broad s
pectrum of applied microbial ecology in food safety and gas production and
will thereafter mainly focus on chemical protection against microbial woo
d degradation processes. The wood protection industry has refined their pro
ducts from chrome-\, copper-\, and arsenate-based wood preservatives towar
d solely copper-based preservatives in combination with organic biocides.
Environmental use of copper-based preservatives leads to an enrichment of
copper tolerant microbial communities in respective soil environments. Suc
h soil communities are overall able to decompose copper-based preserved wo
od over a long time period and thus leading to major damages in wooden sta
kes. As result we could show that Cu-HDO\, containing the chelation produc
t of copper and N-cyclohexyldiazenium dioxide (HDO) has been consumed by b
acterial members of the phylum Acidobacteria and the genera Phenylobacteri
um and Comamonas. To reduce microbial degradation of wood preservative comp
ounds encapsulated wood preservatives were tested in a lab as well as in a
field approach. Fungal and bacterial composition were both significantly
site and soil parameter specific but were less affected by wood preservati
on and time. \nThis presentation will offer an overview of the recent work
in Coburg and will highlight research in microbial wood degradation and w
ood preservation. Finally\, encapsulation of wood preservatives as well as
stable isotope probing techniques combined with molecular biological meth
ods and materials sciences will be explained.\n***Invited by the BayCEER S
 teering Committee
