B3 Multifunctionality of agricultural landscapes: the ecological perspective

Chair: Rainer Waldhardt, Wolfgang Büchs

Wednesday, 09:30-12:00, H17, NWII

Both high production of goods in intensive, conventional agriculture and the abandonment of agricultural land use have multiple negative effects on environmental and societal landscape attributes. Thus, over large areas, agricultural landscapes do not fulfil the requirements of the concept of multifunctionality. Against this background, the notion of multifunctionality of agriculture that was drafted at the Rio Earth Summit of 1992 is highly welcome as a research framework to overcome the obvious imbalance in the allocation of private and public goods and services in agricultural landscapes. All over Europe and beyond, ecologists have been contributing to inter- and transdisciplinary research that aims at the development and implementation of concepts and strategies towards landscape multifunctionality. Moreover, ecologists have focussed on the evaluation of ecosystem goods and services related to agricultural production systems and nature conservation measures in agricultural landscapes. The symposium aims at bringing together ecologists from different parts of Europe and beyond to discuss experimental, empirical and modelling research in the context of landscape multifunctionality.
