In the context of increased nitrogen immissions a spreading of Calamagrostis villosa, which is a competitive rhizomatous grass species of the higher altitudes of the middle and central European mountain ranges, has been observed. Investigations concerning the potential altitudinal distribution showed that presently a spreading into the dryer, lower altitudes must not be assumed. The rate of tiller formation at the C. villosa stand peripheries is promoted by increasing light intensity, phosphate availability and - at high light intensities - soil nitrate concentration. Liming decreases growth in case of low soil phosphate availability. Competition of Deschampsia flexuosa does not decrease the tiller formation of C. villosa. N-fertilisation increases growth of C. villosa and thus suggests a promoting effect of the N-immissions in the past and in the future. On clearcuts N-fertilised C. villosa stands can take up the 2,5fold of the annually deposited N and can thus be considered a N sink. Large patches of Urtica dioica occurring within C. villosa stands can be explained by higher nutrient availability and pH-values in this restricted area. In competition with C. villosa U. dioica was inferior and its growth could not be improved by N-fertilisation.
