Yaoming Ma was born in Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province, China, on July 22, 1964. He went to Lanzhou University in 1983 and graduated from Department of Atmosphere and Geophysics in 1987. In 1987, Yaoming Ma became employed at Lanzhou Institute of Plateau Atmospheric Physics (LIPAP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), which was re-organized in 1999 into Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute (CAREERI), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). In March 2002, he became a professor of CAREERI, CAS. In 2003 he joined ITP, CAS and worked as a professor here.
