UN Convention to Combat Desertification releases "Global Land Outlook 2"

2022-04-28

In the second edition of the "Global Land Outlook" published in April 2022, the UN offers stark warnings and practical remedies for chronic land degradation. Up to 40% of the planet’s land is degraded, directly affects half of humanity and threatens roughly 1/2 of world gross domestic product. If business as usual continued through 2050, the report projects additional degradation of an area roughly the size of South America. It presents a land restoration agenda, where soil and water management play a key role.

The three parts of the report take "Land in Focus", tell about "Restoration around the World" before "Framing the Land Restoration Agenda". It suggests an integrated approach to land and water management and focusses on the multiple benefits: For example, the integrated management of soil and water resources - e.g., terrace and contour farming, conserving and restoring watersheds, rainwater harvesting and storage - improves water retention and availability, prevents soil erosion and landslides, reduces flood risk, sequesters carbon, and protects biodiversity habitat.

The Summary for Decision Makers (24 pages) and long format (204 pages) can be downloaded from the UNCCD website:
