DESCRIPTION:Formed as a non-profit corporation in 2001\, the Consortium of
Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science\, Inc. (CUAHSI) exi
sts to develop a community research and education agenda\, to acquire the
resources to execute that agenda\, and to promote programs of education\,
outreach and technology transfer. The goal of CUAHSI is to enable scientis
ts to perform research that is beyond the scope that any one investigator
or even small teams of investigators can manage. CUAHSI is modeled on rese
arch consortia that have long provided support for fields such as oceanogr
aphy\, seismology\, and astronomy. \nHydroView\, the initial infrastructur
e program currently being designed by CUAHSI\, consists of four elements:
\n\nA network of hydrologic observatories to collect coherent\, multidisci
plinary data sets\, over a wide range of space and time scales in river ba
sins at the 10\,000 km2 scale\; \nA hydrologic information system to store
\, process\, visualize and analyze complex data sets\, including data coll
ected by the hydrologic observatories as well as data collected by governm
ent agencies. This activity will provide a common data model for all hydro
logic observatories and other hydrologic activities\; \nA hydrologic measu
rement technology facility to bring cutting edge technology to the hydrolo
gic observatories and to the broader community\; and\nA hydrologic synthes
is center that will foster synthetic\, collaborative\, cross-disciplinary
 studies\, including cross-observatory studies. \n\nThe presentation will d
iscuss the design strategies behind each of these elements and report on t
he present status of these efforts. Opportunities for international collab
 oration will be highlighted.
