DESCRIPTION:Eingeladen durch Prof. Beierkuhnlein.\nMacaronesia is a biogeog
 raphical region comprising the Atlantic Oceanic islands of the Azores\, Ma
 deira\, Salvages\, Canaries and Cape Verde\, and with affinities to the ti
 p of the Iberian Peninsula and the north-western fringes of Africa. This c
 ontribution re-evaluates the biogeographical history and relationships of 
 Macaronesia\, in the light of geological evidence suggesting that large an
 d high islands may have been continuously available in the region for very
  much longer than indicated by the maximum surface area of the oldest curr
 ent island (27 Ma): possibly for as long as 60 million years. I review thi
 s literature\, attempting a sequential reconstruction of Palaeo-Macaronesi
 a from 60 Ma to the present-day\, commenting on the implications of these 
 geological dynamics for our understanding of the history of colonization o
 f the present islands of Macaronesia\, and of the role of these archipelag
 os as stepping stones\, and as both repositories of palaeoendemic forms an
 d crucibles of neo-endemic radiations of plant and animal groups.\nThe pri
 ncipal focus is on the laurel forest communities\, long considered impover
 ished relicts of the palaeotropicalTethyan flora. This history is therefor
 e contextualised by reference to the long-term climatic and biogeographic 
 history of Southern Europe and North Africa and of the implications of cha
 nges in land-sea configuration\, climate and ocean circulation for Macaron
 esian biogeography.\n
