DESCRIPTION:Climate change increasingly affects tree health and shapes the
functioning of forest ecosystems\, with consequences for tree mortality an
d forest productivity. While much of the current research focuses on summe
r drought as a dominant climate driver of tree growth\, trees respond to c
limate variability across all seasons.\nIn this talk\, I will synthesize i
nsights from long-term tree-ring analyses and global change experiments ac
ross multiple sites to explore how climate variability influences forest g
rowth dynamics beyond the growing season. Evidence is presented from impor
tant temperate forest tree species in Europe\, including the naturally dom
inant European beech as well as widely planted silvicultural conifers. Her
e\, winter and early spring conditions can modify growth phenology\, ampli
fy frost risk\, and affect belowground processes.\nThe talk highlights how
climate effects across seasons lead to divergent responses among tree spe
cies\, and it discusses what this may imply for future shifts in forest co
 mposition and functioning.

DESCRIPTION:In order to make nature restoration more effective\, better too
ls for quantifying the effects of ecological restoration interventions &nd
ash\; and environmental impacts more generally &ndash\; are needed. Here\,
I will present work from my PhD thesis on the application of Generalised
Latent Variable Models (GLVMS) to modeling long term succession dynamics i
n species composition after restoration\, aimed at giving estimates of bot
h the time to recovery relative to a reference\, relative effectiveness of
  different treatments\, and associated uncertainties.

DESCRIPTION:This presentation introduces the PLASTICAL project\, which inve
stigates thefragmentation of plastics during sediment transport and its im
plications for the release of chemical additives. Using a combination of l
aboratory-based fragmentation experiments and field analyses in river syst
ems\, complemented by marine sampling\, we quantify how different transpor
t processes control plastic fragmentation and surface abrasion. Bylinking
fragmentation dynamics to leaching behavior\, the project aims to betterco
nstrain how sedimentary conditions influence additive release. Ultimately\
, this work improves predictions of microplastic distribution and associat
 ed chemical impacts inenvironmental systems.
