DESCRIPTION:Episodic runoff events play a major role in shaping arid landsc
apes. In this talk\, I will explore how these short-lived but intense even
ts influence geomorphological processes in the Atacama Desert\, drawing on
examples from recent rainfall events as well as long-term erosion estimat
es. Together\, we will revisit classic research questions in arid-zone geo
morphology through the lens of my own datasets and the methods I have deve
loped to investigate these processes in such sparsely monitored regions. T
he talk will highlight how extreme runoff events can have disproportionate
impacts on erosion and sediment transport in the drylands of our planet.T
his presentation may be of interest not only to dryland researchers\, but
also to geoscientists interested in the challenge of reconciling processes
  across temporal and spatial scales.

DESCRIPTION:This presentation introduces the PLASTICAL project\, which inve
stigates thefragmentation of plastics during sediment transport and its im
plications for the release of chemical additives. Using a combination of l
aboratory-based fragmentation experiments and field analyses in river syst
ems\, complemented by marine sampling\, we quantify how different transpor
t processes control plastic fragmentation and surface abrasion. Bylinking
fragmentation dynamics to leaching behavior\, the project aims to betterco
nstrain how sedimentary conditions influence additive release. Ultimately\
, this work improves predictions of microplastic distribution and associat
 ed chemical impacts inenvironmental systems.

DESCRIPTION:As climate change progresses\, it is becoming increasingly diff
icult for nature conservation to conserve current states of ecosystems and
populations of species. Likewise\, the restoration of degraded ecosystems
to historical reference states is complicated by the novelty of climatic
conditions relative to those under which the targeted ecosystem states hav
e formed. This confronts nature management with some unsettling questions:
do historical reference states still represent achievable or even desirab
le targets? What are new desirable targets and how can we achieve them giv
en continuous change and uncertainty about the ecological trajectories for
ced by climate change?  In this talk I will give an overview of the strate
gies that have been proposed to manage biodiversity in a changing climate\
, the current scientific basis for supporting decisions between alternativ
e strategies and applied ecological research gaps that require addressing
to provide actionable knowledge for conservation practitioners and policy-
 makers navigating these decisions.

DESCRIPTION:In order to make nature restoration more effective\, better too

I will present work from my PhD thesis on the application of Generalised
Latent Variable Models (GLVMS) to modeling long term succession dynamics i
