DESCRIPTION:Forget divining rods and crystal balls\; if you want to know th
e inner workings of a watershed\, ask the stream. Streamflow acts as a hyd
ro-biogeochemical oracle\, carrying stories of the hidden and hard to meas
ure processes that transform precipitation into river chemistry. But much
like an oracle\, a stream&rsquo\;s story can be ambiguous. Landscape struc
ture\, hydrology\, and biogeochemical processes all jointly shape water qu
ality\, making their relative importance notoriously hard to disentangle.
In this talk\, I will show how combining field observations with watershed
-scale reactive transport modelling helps untangle the hydro-biogeochemica
l processes controlling stream chemistry. First\, mountain catchments are
examined to determine how vegetation\, vertical and spatial solute distrib
ution\, and hydrologic connectivity govern the magnitude and timing of str
eam carbon signals. This framework is then extended to urban catchments\,
where stormwater networks and impervious surfaces disrupt flow paths and i
ntroduce overlapping chemical signals that obscure source inputs. In this
work\, stable carbon isotopes are coupled with RTMs to separate overlappin
g sources and flow paths. &nbsp\;Ultimately\, this work demonstrates that
pairing targeted field data with process-based RTMs offers a powerful way
to dig into complex water quality questions as climate and land-use change
  accelerate.

DESCRIPTION:Rapid Arctic warming and permafrost thaw are exposing previousl
y frozen minerals and sediments to chemical weathering\, with important im
plications for river chemistryand the global carbon cycle. In this talk\,
I use sulfur and oxygen isotopes together with multi-decadal river chemist
ry records from northeast Greenland to investigate howweathering processes
have changed over time and react strongly to erosion and extreme rainfall
events. Particular attention is given to sulfide oxidation and its intera
ction withcarbonate minerals\, revealing how hydrological changes in perma
frost landscapes canalter river chemistry and potentially influence atmosp
 heric CO₂ fluxes.

DESCRIPTION:This presentation introduces the PLASTICAL project\, which inve
stigates thefragmentation of plastics during sediment transport and its im
plications for the release of chemical additives. Using a combination of l
aboratory-based fragmentation experiments and field analyses in river syst
ems\, complemented by marine sampling\, we quantify how different transpor
t processes control plastic fragmentation and surface abrasion. Bylinking
fragmentation dynamics to leaching behavior\, the project aims to betterco
nstrain how sedimentary conditions influence additive release. Ultimately\
, this work improves predictions of microplastic distribution and associat
 ed chemical impacts inenvironmental systems.
