Methane and carbon dioxide fluxes in the peatland ecosystem of European North-East of Russia

The peatlands occupy 9% of Komi Republic territory. In the climate change conditions peatlands play an important role in atmospheric greenhouse gases conservation. We used an eddy-covariance technique to investigate the vertical methane and carbon dioxide fluxes in the ecosystem of meso-oligotrophic peatland of European North-East of Russia. The investigation period lasted a year, the diurnal and seasonal dynamics of methane and carbon dioxide fluxes are shown.

The fluxes of carbon dioxide and methane increased from May to the middle of the summer. The maximum value of fluxes was observed in July. In this month CH4 emission was about 4 μg m-2s-1, the CO2 uptake was about 450 μg m-2s-1. During the next months fluxes gradually decreased. The change in the direction of CO2 flux from uptake to emission in the ecosystem of meso-oligotrophic peatland of middle taiga in European North-East of Russia take place in the first decade of October. The complete cessation of carbon dioxide and methane fluxes in the peatland ecosystem after the stable snow cover formation has not been identified.
