From the forest to the classroom: increasing knowledge and understanding of mountain forests in schools of Loja and Zamora, in southern Ecuador

Project frame: Promotion offer to strengthen the development engagement of diaspora organizations

Results of scientific research generated in San Francisco Scientific Station regarding ecosystem services, climate change and biodiversity of the mountain forests of southern Ecuador.  Application of the designed handbook and workbook for children, through the environmental education method of “Learning by doing”, to transfer the learned knowledge to students  Simplified concepts of ecosystem services, climate change and biodiversity of the mountain forests of Loja and Zamora, resulting from the scientific research developed in San Francisco Scientific Station included in the workbook for children. Importance of mountain forests and scientific research conducted in Loja and Zamora. Results of scientific research generated in San Francisco Scientific Station regarding ecosystem services, climate change and biodiversity of the mountain forests of southern Ecuador.

Coaching to Systematization Group of gaia-liNc, the diaspora of the project
The environmental education expert will transfer knowledge to the systematization group during the elaboration of the content of the handbook and student’s workbook. In addition, the expert will train the diaspora of the project and NCI-Ecuador experts on the implementation of the pedagogical methodology and on the design of trainings for teachers in this subject. This shared knowledge will be applied during the 02 trainings addressed to nature science teachers.

Training of 30 nature science teachers to apply the pedagogic materials in their future lessons:
2 days of training addressed to science teachers from 10 schools of Loja and Zamora, to transfer knowledge about the simplified scientific research  from San Francisco Scientific Station on ecosystem services, climate change and biodiversity of the mountain forests of southern Ecuador, and the pedagogic material and methods included in the handbook and workbook for children. This training will be the replicate of the first training, but it will be led by the diaspora of the project and Nature and Culture International. In this training, the final handbook and workbook for children will be presented and delivered to the teachers. Teachers receiving this training will sign an agreement to incorporate the pedagogical material in their future lessons.
