A new Software Module for consideration of the hydraulic effect of freezing/thawing

P 1.2 in Hydrogeology of alpine regions
Changing climate will likely change the distribution of permafrost in the Alps. Thawing (and freezing) can influence slope stability and the groundwater regime. For modeling such processes a new module for the code FEFLOW was developed which takes the effect of latent heat into account (Anbergen et al., 2014).
The module was successfully benchmarked with comparable other codes (Rühaak, et al., 2015) and will be further extended to consider also effects of mechanical stress due to the volume changes resulting from phase changes.
