La Palma 2011 - Biodiversity of Islands in the Face of Climate Change

TheSience  school "Biodiversity of Islands in the Face of Climate Change"was organised as a two week block course on the island of La Palma (13.04. to 27.04.2011) followed by more flexible time of data analyses and result presentation at Bayreuth University. The block course covered biogeographical excursions, keynote lectures and discussions as well as intensive field work and data analyses. Each group of three participants  developed specific research questions, chose adequate methodologies and conducted a phase of field work and data collection. Lecturers accompany each step with discussions and practical help. Keynote presentations were  given at the El Paso park offices of Parque Nacional de la Caldera de Taburiente, La Palma.

Research topics

Each group of participans was working on one of the following topics:

  1. Climatic Stability and Disturbance Regimes in Laurel Forests – Consequences for Biodiversity
  2. The Influence of Human Infrastructure (Roads) on the Distribution of Endemic Species
  3. Altitudinal Gradients of Island Endemic Species
  4. Succession Trajectories on Lava Flows – Diversity and Endemism related to Time or Altitude
  5. Climatic Habitat Requirements of Aeonium Species
  6. Introduced Herbivores as a Threat for Endemic Species
  7. Habitat Heterogeneity as a Driver for Biodiversity
  8. Monte Verde, Fayal-Brezal and Pine Forests – Are they Differentiated by Climate, Land Use or Fire?
