DESCRIPTION:- eingeladen durch GCE -Latest improvements in sensor and satel
lite technology\, progress in data handling and management and new process
ing and modelling approaches have created a very promising environment to
reconcile large scale timely and accurate measurements from space and airb
orne sensors with quantitative and qualitative approaches to study biologi
cal diversity. The German Aerospace Center runs - as all other major space
agencies - a program to actively engage the biological community in large
scale monitoring and to develop new insights in global\, regional and loca
l species distribution patterns. The talk gives an overview on new sensors
and tools for surveying and mapping\, extends on existing paradigms and co
ntradictions between the biological field centered approaches and a space
agencies 'view' of the world and shows examples of existing exciting and p
 romising cooperations and projects.
