Abstract:
Floristic and ecological characterisation as well as species richness of the dry grassland communities on the island of Saaremaa (Estonia) We studied the dry grasslands inhabiting the Estonian island of Saaremaa in the Baltic Sea. Our aim was the floristic and ecological characterisation of all occurring communities in order to place them into the supraregional phytosociological system and to analyse their small-scale species densities comparatively. We made 231 relevés of 4 m2 plots distributed representatively across the dry grassland areas of Saaremaa. On these, we recorded all vascular plants, bryophytes and lichens. We distinguished eight associations or equivalent units, which belong to three (sub-)classes. The dry grasslands of deep sandy soils (Koelerio-Corynephorenea: 4 associations) inhabit the most extreme sites with respect to water and nutrient supply. The three associations of the Sedo-Scleranthenea grow on shallow, skeletal soils. Semi-dry basiphilous grasslands of the class Festuco-Brometea occur on soils that are most favourable in terms of soil moisture and nutrient availability. The mean species density on 4 m2 is very high in stands of the Sedo-Scleranthenea (41) and Festuco-Brometea (40) but considerably lower in the Koelerio-Corynephorenea (23).
