 e important drivers of global environmental change. Examples of human infl
 uences include the consequences of soil sealing on surface run-off or the 
 destruction of natural habitats by the expansion of agricultural area. The
  concept of land-use systems is a scientific approach to describe the comp
 lex interdependencies between human land-use activities and the environmen
 t. Based on this concept\, models can be formulated to simulate the spatia
 l and temporal dynamics of these systems. In this context\, a fundamental 
 research goal is the integration of model components that represent human 
 decision making processes with components representing environmental proce
 sses. The seminar gives an introduction to the modeling approaches for the
  simulation of regional and continental-scale land-use change that are cur
 rently developed at CESR. Furthermore model applications related to hydrol
 ogical aspects and ecosystem functions are discussed.
