Bayreuth Stable Isotope Summer School
(September 21st to 26th 2025)
This summer in Bayreuth, Bavaria, the BaySISS stable isotope workshop for Ph.D. and interested Master’s students will kick-start your scientific endevour in the world of stable isotopes. Through interesting lectures from renowed specialist in the field, hands on training and intensive training you will be able to apply the tool box of stable isotopes to your own research in the field of (microbial) ecology, limnology, or biology.
Topics
- Keynote lectures from internationally renowned experts
- Theoretical and methodological aspects of natural abundance and tracer studies
- Hands-on lab training:
- Field methods in aquatic microbial, soil and plant ecology.
- Sample preparation techniques.
- IRMS operation and associated peripherals.
- BayCenSI capabilities and potential cooperations
- Support for submitting a stepping stones project
Application procedure
- Submission of an motivational letter (< 1500 characters) together with a CV
- Deadline: 16. March 2025
- Level: Ph.D. and interested master’s students
- Number of Participants: max 20
- The course is cost-free and it is possible to apply for a travel grant covering up to 100% of travel and lodging costs.
- The students can choose between 4 different lab trainings offered according to their backgrounds and interests comprising (choose preference at registration):
- Ecosystem metabolism in lake research (workshop 1)
- Tracing carbon in the plant-soil system (workshop 2)
- Spatial δ13C analysis of microbial necromass (workshop 3)
- Probing of microbial communities through DNA-SIP (workshop 4)
