The open session of the conference covers the entire spectrum of economic and social history research from antiquity to present times. We welcome both qualitative and quantitative presentations, as well as comparative approaches, case studies, and methodological reflections, including digital methods and AI-supported analyses. The open session is intended to be a central component of the conference, showcasing the diversity of current research.

The core theme, “Upheavals in the Global Economy,” addresses profound changes in global economic structures—ranging from drastic crises to processes whose significance only becomes apparent with the passage of time. We are focusing on questions about which historical developments can be considered turning points in the global economy and how their effects can be precisely assessed. The analysis examines both classic examples, such as the Great Depression or the oil price shocks, and the long-term effects of events such as the Black Death, the construction of the Suez Canal, or the Continental Blockade.
