We are a diverse group of enthousiastic scientists working on soil physics, soil hydrology, root-soil interactions, solute and heat transport and modelling soil-plant-atmosphere systems. We advocate that soil physical research requires multiscale understanding, and focusing on a single spatial or temporal scale (e.g., either pore, lab or field) may hinder key soil processes and the holistic understanding of soils. For this, we combine experimental observations with mathematical modeling at different spatial and temporal scales and we attack both fundamental but also applied research questions.
