Conference Theme

The 2022 Annual conference of the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence brings together our work on the Cluster theme of the past academic year (‘Medialities’ in 2021-22). The conference provides an opportunity for all Cluster members to present and further discuss their research related to questions of mediality and engage with theoretical debates involving the conference theme. It aims to foster intellectual exchange within the Cluster and with scholars connected to our network and beyond.

As one of the heuristic angles in the Cluster, we reflect ‘medialities’ as pertaining to all forms of cultural, social and economic production, mediality meaning the general presupposition or condition under which cultural, economic and social production is able to take shape at all. Hence, media encompass, but are in no way limited to means of mass communication and communication technologies, including everything from languages to numbers, cars to light bulbs, clothes to guns, money to resources. Correspondingly, the concept of the medium can be employed to stress the processual and performative character of all culture (including that of groups and organisations), whose multiplicity of practices and phenomena (cultural techniques) are perpetually mediated in various forms.

P
OSSIBLE RESEARCH QUESTIONS ARE:

  • How can we grasp and theorize medialities, especially if it is the case that mediality mediates objects, but does not materialize itself?
  • When and how do mutations, meshes and transformations of medialities fortify or alter existing concepts of meanings, genres, or agencies?
  • How can medialities be connected to neighbouring theoretical concepts such as materialities, networks, epistemologies, or aesthetics, and how can these be utilised in researching and reconfiguring African Studies?
  • How are medialities – both explicitly as well as implicitly – part of knowledge production in the different academic disciplines?
  • How have medialities shaped the contemporary ‘global’ moment?  What do medialities tell us about epistemological borders?
  • Since all forms of cultural, economic and social production are inherently temporal, what is the significance of time in mediations and communications of all kinds?
  • How can the angle of medialities help to systematize and connect research projects?
