Abstract:
During the last years DNA-barcoding has become an efficient method for species identification. Although demanding, applications of barcoding to the species and ecological divers Heteroptera are still scarce. We analyzed DNA barcodes for 1.742 specimens of 457 Central European species, comprising 39 families of the Heteroptera. With a successful identification rate of 94.5% we showed that this method has great potential as complementary method to species identification based on morphological characteristics. Moreover, our study revealed several taxonomic uncertainties and surprises. We found evidence for ongoing hybridization as well as the putative existence of cryptic species.
