Klemm, O; Stockwell, WR: NOx or VOC Limitation in East German Ozone Plumes?, , 59-59 (1999)
Abstract:
Aircraft measurements found enhanced ozone mixing ratios in plumes from cities and power plants over eastern Germany. Model simulations were used to investigate the "sensitivity" and the "limitation" of ozone formation to VOC and NOx concentrations. A zero dimensional chemical box model that was based on the Regional Atmospheric Chemistry Mechanism (RACM) was used to simulate several atmospheric scenarios. Ozone production was limited by the initial VOC concentrations because higher O3 concentrations were produced with reduced initial NOx. Also, in one sample with high SO2 mixing ratios (>100 ppb) the SO2 was found to be a significant contributor to the production of O3.
