Virzo de Santo, A; Rutigliano, FA; Berg, B; Fioretto, A; Fierro, AR: Nitrogen dynamics of decomposing needle litters in three coniferous forests of the Mediterranean area, Fresenius Environmental Bulletin, 7, 510-517 (1998)
Abstract:
Needle decay and N dynamics of stone pine (Pinus pinea), Corsican pine (Pinus laricio), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and silver fir (Abies alba) were studied at three forest sites differing in their levs of soil N. Only the N-rich needles of silver fir released N from the start of the incubation. In the first year, the litters of stone pine and Scots pine accumulated up to 220% of the initial amount on the soil rich in N; on the poor soils the N accumulation reached only 150% of the initial amount; between sites the acumulation rates differed significantly. Thus, soil N level may enhance N accumulation in SOM.
