Welcome to the Chair of Soil Ecology
The Chair of Soil Ecology at University of Bayreuth focuses on the interactions between soils, plants, microorganisms, and the environment under global change. Our research centers on soil health, with particular emphasis on carbon sequestration in soils, biogeochemical nutrient cycles, and the impacts of microplastics on soil functions. The investigation of greenhouse gas emissions, for example from forest soils and peatlands, represents another important aspect of our research. The aim of our work is to provide a scientific basis for the protection and sustainable management of soils. In teaching, we are involved in the Bachelor’s degree programs in Geoecology and Environmental and Resource Technology, where we provide students with a solid understanding of soil processes, biogeochemical cycles, and environmental change. In addition, we contribute to the Master’s program in Geoecology as well as to the international English-language Master’s programs MSc Environmental Chemistry, MSc Global Change Ecology, and MSc Environment Climate Change and Health. Our students benefit from the close integration of cutting-edge research, advanced soil chemical methodologies, and practice-oriented education.
