The effects of the activity of fine roots of beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) on soil solution and solid phase

The aim of the project is to investigate changes in soil solution chemistry induced by growing fine roots of beech trees under field conditions. Soil solution was sampled in high temporal and spatial resolution in the vicinity of a growing root. Surprisingly an increase of the K+ concentrations was found close to the roots (< 2,5 mm distance) while concentrations of NO3- and Ca2+ decreased. The observed gradients of Ca2+, K+ and NO3- in the rhizosphere were variable in time and strength. This might be caused by several propocesses, including the uptake of ions, the leaching from roots and konvective transport in the soil profile. Further investigations on the role of these processes are planned for 1999. Laboratory experiments to investigate the role of Al on ion and water uptake of beech roots were conducted using a quarz-hydroculture setup. We were not able to fix the pH of the solution which increased during the experiment and thus the experiments had to be terminated.
