The talk will provide a definition of the concept of evaluation itself and the role of evaluation in development projects. A brief overview will be given over major types of evaluations and their key elements, which are the problem analysis, the theory of change, the project cycle, the logical framework, and the criteria of the OECD Development Assistance Committee („Relevance“, „Effectiveness“, „Efficiency“ and „Sustainability“).
After that, outcomes from recent evaluations of larger programmes of international organizations with an environmental focus will be introduced, for instance of GEF, UNDP, EU, UNCCD and the German DEVAL Institute. In the second part, typical methods applied in evaluations will be discussed.
