Latest improvements in sensor and satellite technology, progress in data handling and management and new processing and modelling approaches have created a very promising environment to reconcile large scale timely and accurate measurements from space and airborne sensors with quantitative and qualitative approaches to study biological diversity.

The German Aerospace Center runs - as all other major space agencies - a program to actively engage the biological community in large scale monitoring and to develop new insights in global, regional and local species distribution patterns.

The talk gives an overview on new sensors and tools for surveying and mapping, extends on existing paradigms and contradictions between the biological field centered approaches and a space agencies "view" of the world and shows examples of existing exciting and promising cooperations and projects.
