Untersuchung des Energie- und Stoffaustausches in einem Waldökosystem unter besonderer Berücksichtigung turbulenter Strukturen und der Wechselbeziehungen zwischen Atmosphäre, Pflanzen und Boden. Die Messstation verfügt über einen 32 m Turm, an dem mikrometeorologischen Profilmessungen installiert sind und in Projekten auch für luftchemische Messungen verwendet wird, und seit 2007 über einen schlanken 36 m Turm für Turbulenzmessungen.
Messungen der Kohlendioxidflüsse mit der Eddy-Kovarianzmethode begannen 1996 (Station GE1 nach EUROFLUX-Klassifikation) auf Initiative der Professoren Schulze und Tenhunen. Sie werden seitdem kontinuierlich im FLUXNET-Programm weitergeführt.
