European gradients of resilience in the face of climate extremes SIGNAL is a joint experimental research activity across eight European countries combining biodiversity experiments, climate change research, and invasion research. Extreme weather events and the presence of invasive species can act as pressures threatening biodiversity, resilience and ecosystem services of semi-natural grasslands and can suddenly drive them beyond thresholds of system integrity. In a field experiment, stability of natural grassland communities (including invasives or not) against drought will be assessed and the influence of mowing height will be tested. Performance of invasive species in natural grasslands under drought and different mowing heights Rationale: The SIGNAL field site within the ÖBG will comprise natural grassland communities including legume- and non-legume invaders or not, and will be exposed to different mowing heights. The goal is to assess the performance of the invaders depending on drought and mowing regime by assessing multiple parameters (survival, growth, fecundity). Methods: Assessment of invader performance, data analysis time: anytime during summer 2013 Contact: Anke Jentsch, Jürgen Kreyling

Soil respiration, decomposition and soil faunal activity under drought and invasive pressure The SIGNAL field site within the ÖBG will comprise natural grassland communities including legume- and non-legume invaders or not, and will be exposed to different mowing heights and extreme drought. Soil parameters to determine carbon and nutrient cycling and activity will be assessed before, during and after drought. Methods: Assessment of soil respiration, decomposition and other soil parameters time: anytime during summer 2013 Contact: Anke Jentsch, Jürgen Kreyling

Effects of drought, invader presence and mowing regime on natural grassland productivity and resilience Rationale: The SIGNAL field site within the ÖBG will comprise natural grassland communities including legume- and non-legume invaders or not, and will be exposed to different mowing heights and extreme drought. The goal of this work will be to assess the productivity of the natural grassland in response to these drivers of environmental change. Further, methods to assess resilience should be developed and applied. Methods: Quantification of biomass production time: anytime during summer 2013 Contact: Anke Jentsch, Jürgen Kreyling
Haben Pflanzen ein Stressgedächtnis? more Contact: Anke Jentsch, Julia Walter
Characterisation of European grasslands using remote sensing data Rationale: The SIGNAL experiment will comprise natural grassland communities throughout a European gradient. The goal of the analysis will be to characterise locations, status, and composition of these grassland communties and their climatic drivers. Methods: Remote sensing, GIS time: anytime during summer 2013 Contact: Anke Jentsch, Jürgen Kreyling

What constrains the distribution of the invasive Verbascum thapsus from different provenances / continents? In a pot experiment, V. thapsus from worldwide provenances will be raised and subjected to different climate scenarios such as drought and late frost. The objective of the study is to assess climatic filters constraining the distribution of this species in the invasive range. Methods: Assessment of various plant performance parameters time: anytime during summer 2013 Contact: Anke Jentsch

Methodik: vorhandenen Datensatz auswerten Zeit: jederzeit Contact: Jürgen Kreyling, Anke Jentsch
