The nitrogen budget of the upper Eger catchment (32 km2) is investigated at 5 experimental sites in the Weissenstadt basin. Field experiments in this agricultural area were started in spring 1998. They concentrate on the determination of water content, matric potential and nitrate content in the soil. Cooperations with other BITÖK departments, consulting agencies and multiple authorities provide further data required for the landscape model. Together with GIS based spatial data, the model will illuminate the effect of changes in the landuse system on nitrate leaching. Additional research focuses on the amount of complexity required for modelling a catchment of that size. Furthermore, the uncertainty of input parameters and its implications on the quality of the results are investigated.
