With its small-scale spatial organization, the investigation of spatio-temporal dynamics of rhizosphere processes is enormously challenging. Within the SPP 2089 rhizosphere project, we aim to present how we apply new sampling techniques (gradient vs. common) with new spatial stable isotope approaches and biomarker analyses (e.g. lignin, suberin, cutin) to investigate the microscale carbon (C) exudation, immobilization and storage dynamics within the rhizosphere and how these dynamics are influenced by root morphology and soil texture.
