Madagascar is a hyper-diverse large continental island that is separated from continents since approx. 80 Mio y. In consequence, it exhibits an outstanding richness of endemic species that are phylogenetically very distinct. For this reason, Madagascar contributes to an extraordinary degree to global biodiversity.
We compare two climate change scenarios and calculate forward and backward climate change velocity in terms of spatial shifts of climatic conditions related to current and future projections. Thereby, we consider the diversity of ecoregions of the islands that are hosting a large range of different ecosystems and species.
