New and coordinated coping strategies are needed to combat the spectrum, intensity, and speed of environmental changes that threaten the primary instrument for nature conservation — protected areas. In international agreements, signatories must agree to extend the global network of protected areas; however, appropriate extension will only be achieved if the effectiveness and adaptive capacity of area-based nature conservation is enhanced. Increasing data accessibility in global repositories, and big data from geoinformatics and remote sensing, can produce summaries of high spatial and temporal resolution, as a basis for smart decision-making.
