Abstract:
The bee fauna in the Botanical Garden of the University of Bayreuth was investigated from early spring through the fall of 2000. 144 bee species (inclusive Apis mellifera) were identified. These results emphasise the importance of this area for the regional bee fauna. 62% of the known species in Upper Franconia have been found here. In the Botanical Garden 65% of the 112 nest-building species construct their nests in the soil, 35% above ground and 32 spp. are cleptoparasites. The nests of 22 spp. were found, most on bare or sparsely vegetated ground in a fallow area and along a southerly exposed sandy slope. Arrangements have been made with the staff of the Botanical Garden for the conservation of these sites. Bees were collected from flowers of more than 200 plant species. About 30% of the pollen collecting species were oligolectic, most of them preferring Asteraceae, Fabaceae and Salix spp. Comparisons were made with similar investigations conducted in other Botanical Gardens in Europe.
