A statistical relation between NO3--fluxes with seepage and runoff, C/N ratios of the humus layer and N fluxes in throughfall was established using data from 16 european Norway spruce sites. The C/N ratio of the humus layer is negatively correlated with the NO3- output. The prediction of NO3- output is further improved by including the N flux with throughfall as an independent variable. The observed relation may be used for extrapolation to larger areas; however the range of uncertainty of the calculated NO3- output is about _+0.5 kmol ha-1 yr-1.
