Abstract:
Due to the significant reduction of anthropogenic acid deposition in Europe and North America, scientists are confronted with the need to understand and predict ecosystem recovery. In a recent letter to Nature, Stoddard et al. reported a widespread aquatic recovery from acidification for European ecosystems as a response to the significant reduction of sulphate deposition. However, depending on site characteristic many sites in Central Europe show a significant delay or even no aquatic recovery and none of the sites show biological recovery of waters or a recovery from soil acidification. Thus, ecosystem managers are still confronted with the deleterious consequences of acidification.
