Exercise course: Impact Assessment of Markets and Policies on Land Use and Ecosystem Services (M 18) (74073)

WS 2019/2020
We.: 12:00-14:00, FAN01 B.1.0.1 (FAN B, 1st floor)

Thomas Schmitt, Maria Hänsel

Exercise course, 3 ECTS

Starting date: 16 October 2019

Learning objective: Politics, as well as national and international markets, often have a major impact on regional land use decisions and thus on the provision of key ecosystem services. Important here are the decisions of individual land users, since they are the ones who react to policies and markets. Going through the steps of the model development will enhance participants’ modeling skills and understanding of complex, interactive systems.”

Course Content: In this exercise, we will model land use decisions based on market development, agricultural and environmental policy in different case study regions. Using agent-based modeling (in NetLogo), existing models will be adjusted and parameterized. This modelling approach allows the identification of probable land use decisions by individuals. Changes in ecosystem services through land-use decisions can be integrated into the decision-making process. Subsequently, consequences for the design of policy measures and the provision of ecosystem services are analysed and evaluated.
