Learning Objectives: Global change in climate, land use, markets and politics has a major impact on the performance of ecosystems. The aim of this module is to examine in greater depth the ecosystem services relevant to societies (food production, erosion regulation, drinking water purification, risk protection, etc) and their relationship to biodiversity.

Course Content: The lecture „Ecosystem Services” gives an overview of ecosystem services in regional and global human-environmental systems. Contents include the definition and classification of ecosystem services, their relationship to biodiversity and the role of global change. Furthermore, the physical quantification and socio-economic evaluation, the supply and demand by social actors as well as the management of the performance of the ecosystem by market-related policy instruments are dealt with.
