Current Research

My current research is in the area of surface-biosphere-atmosphere interactions, in the context of physical geography and applied meteorology/climatology with a special interest in boundary-layer phenomena at the micro and local scales. My focus is upon natural and human-modified environments, with the long-term goal of making fundamental contributions to:

(i)                  The physics of the urban boundary-layer, with primary interest in turbulent transfer processes using state-of-the-art instrumentation and field observations.

(ii)                Understanding the pathways of interaction, linkages and feedbacks between physical processes (e.g., momentum exchange as well as carbon, energy and moisture cycling) and social systems in natural and human-modified environments.

The motivation for my research lies in the fundamental difficulty that often lead to the collapse of the well-established parameterizations and relationships generally used to describe the mean and turbulence atmospheric properties over homogeneous terrain, when they are applied to regions of inhomogeneity, such as over cities. It is of fundamental importance to improve our understanding of the physical transfer processes in these regions of inhomogeneity to be able to quantify and predict the exchanges of energy and moisture, the dispersion of pollutants or the cycling of atmospheric trace species that play key roles in climate change and human well being.

My research on these issues has lead to extensive and productive collaboration on several field based research programmes on three continents, including:

(i)         Dispersion of air pollution into the local environment (DAPPLE), (London, UK)

(ii)        The Kansas City urban energy flux measurement experiment (KFLUXMEX), using eddy correlation technique (Kansas City, MO, USA. PI: Prof. Jimmy Adegoke, Geosciences, Univ. of Missouri, Kansas City, USA)

(iii)       Surface Energy Flux Measurement over the Mexican Tropical Deciduous Forest, using eddy correlation techniques.

(iv)       Land use and ecosystem-atmosphere carbon, energy and water exchange (St. Paul. MN, USA. PI: Prof Joe McFadden, EEB, Univ. of Minnesota, Twin Cities, USA)

(v)        Characteristics of the urban heat island (Akure, Nigeria)

(vi)       The Nigerian micrometeorological experiment (NIMEX), (Ile-Ife, Nigeria)
