Key Skills / Soft Skills

Nowadays, for a successful carreer it is rarely sufficient to hold a maximum of expert knowledge. Especially the structured promotion program wants to develop social competences and key skills such as communicative abilities, self-confidence, intuition, capacity for team work, capacity for criticism, analytical competence, reliability, self-discipline, curiosity, capacity for dealing with conflicts, and authority.

Certainly, many of these abilites cannot be acquired during just three years of a dissertation project, but will result only from long-term professional and life experiences. Some of them, however, can be trained and successfully practised. In this field, there is a broad range of courses, offered i.a. from Fortbildungszentrum Hochschullehre (FBZHL), the successful completion of which is recognized by PEER.

Course on Environmental Forensics

jointly organized by Prof. Dr. Andreas Held (Atmospheric Chemistry) and Prof. Dr. Britta Planer-Friedrich (Environmental Geochemistry)

A 4days retreat to the former forester´s house at Wallenfels will give us a secluded atmosphere to investigate a case study in the general field of environmental sciences. This winter´s course (26.-29.04., already booked) will deal with Chromium contamination at Hinkley, USA (a case well known by the award-winning movie "Erin Brokovitch"). The topic in the next summer course will be the recent Oil Spill at the Gulf of Mexico. After a brief introduction to rhetorics you will simulate a court hearing in a role play. Roles include those of defense and plaintiff as well as experts on atmospheric chemistry, engineering geology, hydrogeology, toxicology, statistics, etc. You will both increase your specialist knowledge as well as your communication and argumentation skills.

At our e-learning homepage you can already pre-register for the summer course, the dates will be fixed at the beginning of the summer semester. The summer course will be held in English.
